The Topic Room: LIE OF THE SENSES

Using our senses to understand spiritual matters is like lifting a magnifying glass to the sky and using it to examine our solar system!

When I face certain life challenges (as I am currently facing), I often have to resist the urge to evaluate my situation using the eyes of the flesh. It’s a slippery slope and an altogether big mistake to do so.

By now, I’m sure we are all aware that the powers that operate in the spirit realm are vastly superior and more comprehensive than what we experience in the physical realm. But as seemingly elusive as the spirit realm appears, our understanding of its workings is hinged on the level of our dependence on our fleshy senses.

It can be near impossible to properly evaluate our current trials and tribulations through the eyes of the spirit. It’s hard to see that taunting bank balance and still believe that you have access to the riches of our heavenly Father, who owns the cattle on a thousand hills. It’s hard to feel physical pain and yet believe that the stripes of Christ heal you. It’s sometimes near impossible to claim and walk in the wonderful promises of God for our lives when we are surrounded by run-down neighbourhoods and occupations with no seeming prospects for the future.

The Bible states that our God calls into being things that do not exist and that we should not look to things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. The things that are seen are temporal, but the unseen things are eternal (Romans 4 v 17, 2 Corinthians 4 v 18). If what is unseen carries more weight than what we can see, and if God Himself calls things that are not as though they are, then we can make a logical assumption: When it comes to matters of the spirit realm, our senses may be lying to us!

When waiting on God to answer our prayer requests, we tend to turn to our senses for a speedy evaluation of the situation. And these senses are quick to inform us that if we haven’t heard it, smelt it, seen it, touched it or felt it, then it has not transpired. However, my outlook on my kingdom walk changed when I began meditating on the correct function of our senses. Our senses are there so that we can operate efficiently on earth. They are merely tools to function in this limited and elementary world. We must not refer to our senses to give us truth about God and about who we are in Christ!

Furthermore, Christ demonstrated great power during His brief stay on earth, and when he spoke, His words were spirit and life.

John 6 v 63: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”

As true superheroes for Christ, we must be aware of the realm in which our kingdom powers operate because…

Ephesians 6 v 12: “… our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

1 Corinthians 2 v 9-10: “…but just as it is written: Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered into the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him. (10) For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.”

We need to rely less on our fleshly equipment and more on the activities that will enhance our spiritual weaponry. And as we face life’s challenges, let us resist the urge to evaluate what we are going through using the lens of our senses. A heavy reliance on our senses can lead to depression and a watered-down sense of our true identity in Christ. A healthier reliance on our spiritual armour (such as Biblical scripture) will not only better equip us in attaining victory on earth and increase our kingdom confidence, but it will also help us to avoid wading in the murky lies of the flesh and rather walk upright in the glorious light of kingdom truth.

So, while we use our earthly senses to function, let us use our spiritual senses to conquer!
