The Kiniun Blog: ENTRY 4 – NOT OF THIS WORLD

Growing up as an African, my ears often rang with the ‘not so subtle’ comparisons to other more accomplished children.

If it wasn’t: “You know, the Adekunle’s daughter just got a master’s degree.”

It was: “Bola can now preach a church message all by herself now. Can you do that?”

And of course, there was the: “If your friends can get A’s in school, then you should be getting A+!”

Suffice it to say, I didn’t seem to be on the same journey as my extraordinary friends. I must have missed that boat. Thankfully, even at a young age, I was self-assured enough to know that one day, my own gifts would be called upon. But it did make me think: It’s one thing to try and live up to my mortal peers, but it’s quite another thing to live up to the standard of Christ Himself. Christ was confident in His identity and capabilities and this trait is the cornerstone of this blog.

John 8:23 (Speaking to the Scribes and Pharisees) “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.”

Christ made it abundantly clear that not only did He know who He was, He had no qualms in letting people know. That kind of confidence could only come from a clear understanding of where He came from and who sent Him.

John 13:3 – ‘Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that he had come forth from God and was going back to God.

In the spirit of emulating Christ, would it not benefit us to emulate His words too? And if we feel we’re not justified in using His words, perhaps John 17:16 will help. Jesus, speaking to the Father, referring to His followers, says – “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”

If we can celebrate and appreciate a fictional super-being who landed on earth, carrying the very essence and power of his planet, Krypton, then surely we can at least entertain the reality that our King did exactly that, and went one step further, by giving us the gift of His DNA, ensuring that we too are not of this world.

NOT OF THIS WORLD – This is the foundation of our identity in Christ. Once we internalise this reality, we can then get to the exciting journey of exploring the perks and powers we have always had access to.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m looking forward to it.
