The Kiniun Blog: ENTRY 8 Salt, Light and Power

Maybe it’s my naturally competitive nature or the clawing frustration of seeing Christians not living up to their full potential, but this post has a firm grip on my heart.

Scripture says we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Did you know that there are over 14 000 known uses for salt! By their inherent nature, salt and light are there to serve, whether for taste or clarity of sight, respectively. But they are also operative instruments. For example, salt is instrumental in inhibiting the growth of some harmful microorganisms found in bacteria. Light (particularly sunlight) sets off vitamin D production in the body, which aids our immune system. Salt and light have specific jobs to do!

Mathew 5 v 13 – 15: You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people. (14) You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; (15) nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.”

It’s funny how this scripture often flitters over our heads like the daintiest of butterflies, instead of impressing on us the gravity and importance of our role on earth. Or let me put it this way, take away light and salt from the earth – now imagine our existence in that scenario!

Furthermore, as followers of Christ, we are carriers of Christ, which means we are lethal in fending off the enemy.

The NASB version reads one of my favourite scriptures (Isaiah 59 v 19) as follows: “…for he’ll come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the Lord drives.” [The more popular NKJV reads as follows: “When the enemy comes in, like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”]

We are that standard! When a General sends out His soldiers to battle, the soldiers don’t wait for the General to come and save them should they encounter a problem; they take His instructions, trust him and go out into the battlefield! But many of us are still waiting for God to appear and wave a magic wand to eliminate the enemy. God has already flooded the earth with salt and light. It is now up to us to rise to the occasion and be a blessing so that we can affect healthy and Godly change wherever we find ourselves.

Paul wrote that the power of Christ works mightily within us (Colossians 1 v 29). And Christ is seated at God’s right hand in heavenly places far above all rule and authority and power and dominion… (Ephesians 1 v 20 – 21). If our lives are hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3 v 3), then this is where we are situated too. We are in a position of power!

Followers of Christ are a threefold cord of salt, light, and power, and if we activate the unquenchable force within us, we can bring healing and clarity as we enforce the power of God in our communities.

Let us keep that cord firmly intact and show the world what we’re made of!
