The Topic Room: SOURCE OF PEACE

For the next few minutes, I want to invite you to forget your occupation and the errands you need to run today. I invite you to lay aside the hurt and regrets of yesterday and years gone by and shut your mind to the anxiety of the future. Imagine yourself without the burden of social requirements regarding physical appearances. For a moment, suspend the expectations of country and loved ones far and near. For now, remove the label of mother, father, doctor, bricklayer, homemaker, cleaner or student. Instead, see yourself as an unencumbered being standing in the presence of your Creator.

We carry so much on our plates every day, but there is a place we can go to get away from all those weighty expectations. There is a place that is saturated with nothing but peace. Can you imagine that? Do we even know what that feels like? Unfortunately, we forget to set time aside in order to shed the bulky residue of labels and social constructs, so we can freely immerse ourselves in the presence of our loving heavenly Father.

With all the challenges I am currently facing, I crave those moments when I can forget about EVERYTHING and simply relax in the presence of God, either in prayer, praise, worship or even silence.

In the book of Matthew, Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

We could all do with a little rest, couldn’t we? But I don’t necessarily believe that Jesus will give us a ‘thing’ called ‘rest’. It is not something that is arranged in a box, neatly tied up in a bow and placed in our hands. It is not a state of consciousness or a destination. I believe that rest is already inside us; we just need to know how to activate it.

Galatians Chapter 2 v 20: “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”

If we already have the Source of peace living within us, then it stands to reason that although spas and vacations provide a temporary reprieve from our hectic lifestyles, true peace may only be found when we connect with the Father and activate the deposit of His Spirit within us – allowing Jesus to shine through us. Not only will this method provide lasting peace, but it will also present us as a source of peace for those around us. Others will not only experience peace by embracing Christ, but they will also experience peace when they come to us. Why? Because Christ is in us!

I encourage us all today to activate the peace within us. We can do this by spending quality time in the presence of the Father. And if we do this regularly, we will operate from a more productive outlook on life. Our daily decisions will stem from a springboard of better clarity; anxiety will be a thing of the past, even our health will be the better for it! And as we forge ahead in our earthly vocations and responsibilities, we will become walking, talking beacons of peace!

If you are yet to identify what your purpose on earth is, allow yourself to flourish in this calling – a calling to demonstrate an alternative to turmoil and turbulence in an otherwise chaotic world. Why not accept the assignment to demonstrate Christ and be a source of peace for those around you?
