The Topic Room: WILL HE OR WON’T HE?
Certain questions are nothing short of pointless and rhetorical. For example, can Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson bench press a baseball bat? Can Cristiano Ronaldo score from a set-piece? Or can Beyonce Knowles belt out the arguably banal yet soul-soothing tune of ‘Twinkle Twinkle little star? It would be ludicrous to question the abilities of some well-known celebrities. And it would be even more ridiculous to question God’s ability to do anything He wishes to do. But therein lies the rub. We don’t question God’s ability, but we do sometimes question His willingness.
At times, I have found myself wondering if God is willing to answer a particular prayer. I would spend days dissecting the probability of God granting a personal desire or request based on factors such as: if I deserved it, if others had received similar blessings before, if God was in a good mood that day or not. Suffice it to say, the Lord was not about to entertain my childish and unbiblical theories. Thankfully, He has taught me over the years that He will grant us our heart’s desires if:
- It Aligns With His Word – Jeremiah Chp 1 v 12: ‘Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it.”’
The Lord is very particular about His word; therefore, aligning yourself with His word is a pretty sure way to have your requests granted (Psalm 138 v 2).
- If It Leads To Salvation – Luke Chp 15 v 10: ‘In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.’
He gave His own life to save mankind, so you know that a sinner’s salvation is exceptionally close to His heart (John 3:16).
- If It Brings Him Glory – Psalm Chp 19 v 1: ‘The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.”
Anything that brings God glory declares Who He is and will ultimately please Him (Isaiah 42 v 8).
When dealing with matters that require a specific answer to questions such as; which job offer to accept or which venture to take on, we need to pray and wait on the Lord for guidance, trusting that we will receive His answer if we are patient and if we pay attention to Him.
But what about times when we need the Lord to do something extraordinary?
My husband always tells me, “Just because God hasn’t done it before, doesn’t mean you can’t be the first.”
I cast my mind back to some of the extraordinary events in the Bible – The parting of the Red Sea. The collapse of the walls of Jericho. Christ’s resurrection. None of these events had taken place before, but when the need arose, God, in His infinite wisdom and power, stepped in and put together a plan that exceeded everyone’s expectations. The Israelites plan was to outrun the Egyptians, but God planned to separate the sea ahead of them and let them pass, while their enemies perished under the same body of water. They set off to conquer the heavily fortified city of Jericho, but God planned to peel down the walls so they could step in and take the city. The Jews waited for a warrior who would deliver them from Roman oppression, but God sent a Baby who would grow to be a King and deliver them from sin and death itself. That is the God that we serve. That is the God to whom we present our prayers. And His plans are always better than ours.
No matter what you are facing now and no matter the trials you may face in the future, please never doubt God’s willingness to come through for you, and please do not make the mistake of thinking He does not have a solution tailored-made for your particular situation. As He has already shown you in His word, He will part the sea, pull down walls and even sacrifice Himself to get to you! Even if it has never been done before. Why? Because you are that precious to Him!

Just in time Folu. I have been trusting God for certain openings in my life and trying to focus and listen to his direction instead of punishing myself with reasons why I am not worthy. In the end, I suppose its a mindset thing. Insightful as always!
God wants the best for us. Let’s continue to trust Him. I’ll be praying along with you, Refilwe.🙏🙏
